Description

Bud Leavitt travels to Fort Kent and canoes the Fish River with Bob Jalbert, Greg Jalbert, and Don Michaud. Leavitt speaks with the men in canoes beside the River about river canoeing, paddles, setting poles, canoes, navigating whitewater rapids, the use of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, and recommended steps for preserving the rivers. The International Snowshoe Convention was held in Lewiston, Maine, on February 2nd-3rd, 1950. The collection currently holds two silent films covering events from the Convention. Part 1 includes coverage of the coronation ball, ice palace, and athletics competitions. Part 2 includes coverage of the parade, mass at SS. Peter and Paul Church, and the bean supper.

The collection includes olympics and other canoe/kayak related clothing, as well as trophies and medals from canoeing, kayaking, softball, and bowling. Photograph of Yvonne Buhrle Strumpf (1911-2003) skiing, probably in Vermont or New York. Yvonne was born in France in 1911 to a French mother and a Swiss/German father. Yvonne spent time in a refugee camp during World War I due to her Swiss/German heritage. Yvonne emigrated to the United States in 1929.
