    Shideler, Janet; Private Collection

L'Avenir National first appeared in October 1871 and ceased publication in August 1876. The weekly publication knew many homes, beginning first in St. Alban's, VT under the directorship of Antoine Moussette and Frédéric Houde. From 1872 to 1875, it was published in Troy, NY, and from 1875 to 1876, it was published in Cohoes, NY by Louis G. LeBoeuf. Various advertisements from Cohoes and Troy are featured here. Articles included in this collection relate to social events frequented by Franco-Americans in the two cities. In particular, the activities of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Societies of Cohoes, Albany, and Troy. Also of note are the editor's comments regarding the religious faith of the Franco-American community and his encouragement that members of that community be united, strong, and honorable citizens of the country in which they now live.
